Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III
You can’t get the shot if you don’t have your camera. Rule #1 of photography……right before Rule #2 – Take your lens cap off. I have been one of the worst violators of Rule #1 the past few years despite making valiant efforts to take my camera with me when I go out. When I had finally made the jump to digital photography in 2004, with the purchase of the first Canon Rebel digital SLR, I took that camera EVERYWHERE. It was always within arms reach even if I went to the grocery store. It was because of that, that I rarely missed shots like this one while driving around aimlessly on a sunny March afternoon. I had no sooner turned a corner onto a side road when all of a sudden a large cloud blocked the sun and brought with it giant wet globs of snow flakes for all of 23 seconds before it passed and the sun reappeared. In that 23 seconds and haze of snow, I spotted this tree off to my left, stopped the truck, rolled down the window, grabbed the camera and snapped off 3 or 4 frames before it was over. It happened so quickly, that had my camera not been just sitting on the passenger seat ready to go, I would have missed it in the time it would have taken me to pull it out of a bag. To this day this picture serves as a reminder that a once-in-a-lifetime moment won’t wait until I have my camera with me.
